Abstract

Recent information about the pathophysiology and epidemiology of tropical gastrointestinal and hepatic infections is reviewed, and progress towards the development of an effective cholera vaccine is discussed. Advances have also been made in treatment strategies directed against traditional, emerging and re-emerging pathogens, including typhoid fever, that are more efficacious, convenient and cost-effective.
