Abstract
Methane liberated in coal mines is a potential safety hazard because it is explosive at relatively low concentrations (5-15%) in air. These gas emissions can be used for generating power in gas-fired turbo-electric generators thereby reducing the methane concentration in air to a safe level minimizing the risk of mine explosions and its contribution to greenhouse effect when discharged to the atmosphere.
