N2 - The Neisseria gonorrhoeae lipooligosaccharide biosynthetic gene lsi-1 is preceded by a 281-bp non-protein-encoding sequence, lsi-3, that contains two pairs of inverted repeats. Gonococcal chromosomal lsi-xylE gene fusions were generated to measure the effect of the secondary structure on transcriptional attenuation. The data obtained indicate that lsi-3 and lsi-1 are not transcriptionally linked and therefore that lsi-3 is not involved in the regulation of lsi-1.
