Abstract

As nursing education transitions to a competency-based focus required by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Essentials: Core Competencies for Nursing Education, Miller's Pyramid of Clinical Competence provides a beneficial framework for the development and validation of skills needed for competent practice. The purpose of this article is to provide examples of how Miller's Pyramid can be applied to assess and develop nurse practitioner student competencies. Progressing from knowing, observing, and showing that one can perform a task and then doing the task fosters autonomous thinking and practice competencies.
