Abstract

As highway projects become more complex, Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are pressured to complete projects with tighter schedules, stricter budgets, and limited workforce. This motivated DOTs to utilize technology, notably wireless and sensing ones, that helped projects report beneficial outcomes like improved resource utilization and enhanced quality management. This study focuses on 10 technologies - radio frequency identification, barcodes and readers, object recognition, infrared, e-ticketing, ground penetrating radar, unmanned aerial systems or vehicles, light detection and ranging, geographic information system, and global positioning system. A survey was sent out to DOT construction and asset management practitioners to examine the current state of the technologies' usage, their maturity level, challenges that DOTs faced during implementation, and the key performance indicators that DOTs use to evaluate their performance. Findings provide both practitioners and researchers with a fundamental overview of the current state of the adoption of wireless and sensing technologies in highway projects.
