Description
Objectives: 1) The University of Kentucky, College of Nursing (UK CON) in collaboration with University of Kentucky Barnstable Brown Diabetes and Obesity Center (UK BBOC) will develop, implement, and evaluate a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) as an American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) grant-funded site; 2) Follow all standards and procedure and guidelines for Centers for Disease Control Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP) as a “pending” recognized site and in two years become a recognized DPRP site.
Intervention: Development and implementation of the DPP based on standards and procedures and guidelines for the CDC DPRP. The UK BBOC meets the requirement for a nationally certified Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) program.
Participants: At least 10 eligible participants (CDC, 2015) within six months of registration of DPRP (as per DPRP Standards and Operating Procedures) will receive the CDC DPP by trained lifestyle coaches.
Outcomes Measures: CDC-required data elements (CDC, 2015, pp. 15-16) with no information in identifiable form (directly or indirectly identifiable).
Discussion: Data from the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) study show that lifestyle intervention or treatment with metformin can be cost-effective in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes (Herman, et al., 2005). Furthermore after three years, the DPP also showed that treatment with pharmacological agents for hypertension and hyperlipidemia were reduced by 27–28% and 25%, respectively in the intervention group when compared with the control group (Ratner, et al., 2005).
Conclusion: The UK CON in collaboration with the UK BBOC has the resources and required DSME recognized program to develop, implement, and evaluate the grant-funded, CDC-led, AADE DPP.
