Description
The long-term goal of this translational research project is to develop a vibrant fully
integrated cancer center & community program that concentrates on reducing the
morbidity and mortality of lung, esophageal, liver, and pancreatic cancers. The
dominant theme is a focused early detection/screening strategy. To reach this goal, the
project, of necessity, has two related yet discrete arms. One arm supports prevention,
amelioration of nicotine dependence, and early detection strategies in a populationbased
approach. The second arm employs evidence-based methods to diagnose,
optimally treat, manage symptoms, and deliver palliative care. Both arms provide a
strong platform for translational research where application of bench science evolves
quickly into clinical science. These approaches include the integration of molecular
epidemiology.
