Abstract
Mental health is important for overall wellbeing. Poor social determinants of mental health are
associated with increased physical health problems, social isolation, substance use, and lower life
expectancy. According to National Core Indicators, 25% of Kentuckians with developmental
disabilities experience anxiety disorders, 32% experience mood disorders, 14% experience
psychotic disorders, and 9% experience other mental illnesses. Kentuckians with mental health
concerns, and in particular rural Kentuckians, often face unique challenges including limited
access to mental health services and mental health professionals, privacy concerns, and stigma.
There is a need for increased access and awareness of mental health resources and services for
Kentuckians in rural areas, including transition age youth, to reduce stigma regarding and eliminate
barriers to mental healthcare. Mental wellness is essential for coping with stress, building healthy
relationships, and improving overall well-being. An increased understanding of mental wellbeing
positively impacts how individuals think, feel, and act in their daily lives and benefits individuals,
families, and communities.
This project will assess the needs and gaps of mental health in rural Kentucky communities and
implement innovative strategies to enhance mental health services through training, community
outreach, and partnerships. Project staff and subject matter experts who have lived experience
with disability will guide all project activities. As part of this project, a needs assessment will be
conducted using the Concerns Report Method, partnerships will be strengthened, and existing
resources will be shared and refined. Trainings will be held in person and online.
