Description
The purpose of this project is to provide the United States Forest Service with landslide
susceptibility assessments for the Jellico Assessment Area of the Stearns Ranger District
of the Daniel Boone National Forest. These landslide susceptibility assessments are
accomplished in two ways. First, a digitized inventory of landslide extents will be produced
from remote sensed imagery, for monitoring and characterization. These landslides will
be field checked to confirm the digitized extents. Second, a geomorphic-based statistical
landslide susceptibility model using a dual machine learning approach will leverage the
landslide inventory and other lidar derivatives to create a landslide susceptibility map for
the area. Instruction from Kentucky Geological Survey researchers will be done to train
Forest Service staff on model interpretations and to encourage independent computations
of the susceptibility model. These landslide susceptibility models should assist in future
mitigation plans and land use management decisions.
