Description
Beginning in 2003-04, the state of Kentucky mandated that all college- bound
high school students are expected to have completed two years of a world
language successfully as a condition of their admission to Kentucky's public
postsecondary institutions. In response, the University of Kentucky created a
Masters of World Language program (MATWL) to begin to address the
existing shortage of world language teachers. The UK MATWL program
began with a focus on preparing teachers in European languages, especially
Spanish, French, and German. We now seek to extend and grow that program
to train a significant number of Chinese language teachers.
