Expanded Kentucky Trauma Registry Data Collection and Analysis

This project will improve the completeness of injury surveillance data by making a measurable and significant increase in the number of trauma patients whose information is accessible to users statewide. The baseline level is some 5,000 patients annually and the goal is to have information accessible on 8,000 patients by the end of the 2012 grant year. At the end of the first year of funding, observations had increased to 6,476. Analysis of a broader range of trauma data will support trauma system planning in a arger proportion of Kentucky's counties by providing a more complete and detailed account of traumatic injury and trauma care than has ever been available. Specific types of. data available through the trauma registry include detailed information about the nature and severity of injuries, use of safety belts and other protective devices, surgical procedures, and outcomes at discharge and follow-up. KIPRC has developed productive relationships with key partners in state highway safety and will build on shared successes to assure that findings are available and useful for safety improvement initiatives.
