Abstract Global Artistic Practice (GAP) Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Programme The Global Artistic Practice (GAP) Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme offers a forward-looking model for artistic education that responds to the realities of global, digitally mediated practice. Developed jointly by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (Belgium), the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (Poland), and the University of Kentucky (USA), the programme delivers a fully accredited degree that rethinks artistic mobility, collaboration, and production for the 21st century. Vision and Innovation GAP responds to a key challenge in contemporary art education: the persistent separation between digital and material modes of making. Rather than positioning technology as an auxiliary tool, the programme integrates digital methodologies as core components of artistic research and production. Through innovative pedagogical models such as Teleporting Artworks—where students develop work digitally and materialise it across partner institutions— GAP enables sustainable, location-independent collaboration while preserving the tactile and site-specific dimensions of artistic practice. Programme Structure The 120 ECTS programme combines practice-based learning with critical inquiry through a tightly integrated, cross-institutional framework. Key elements include: • An interdisciplinary curriculum linking artistic practice, theory, and research • Hybrid mobility models that balance physical residencies with sustained remote collaboration • Shared access to complementary infrastructures, ranging from traditional studios (printmaking, photography, textiles) to advanced digital fabrication facilities (VR/AR, 3D printing, computational design) • Collaborative outputs such as exhibitions, virtual residencies, and research publications This structure allows students to work fluidly across institutions while developing a coherent, research-driven artistic practice. Impact and Sustainability GAP fosters a resilient and inclusive artistic ecosystem that extends beyond institutional and geographic boundaries. Students engage with emerging artistic methodologies while faculty collaboratively develop innovative pedagogical approaches. The programme’s hybrid model enhances accessibility, reduces the environmental impact of traditional mobility schemes, and establishes scalable formats for international art education. Initiatives such as the simultaneous multi-location exhibition Bridging the GAP exemplify how artistic practice can operate across physical and digital contexts without sacrificing conceptual or material depth. European Added Value By linking European and American institutions with complementary strengths, GAP strengthens transatlantic artistic exchange while positioning Europe at the forefront of globally networked art education. Addendum: Consortium Development (Post-Submission) Following the submission of this application in February 2025, the GAP consortium has undergone strategic refinement to further strengthen its institutional foundation and ensure robust programme delivery. Core Consortium Update The Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków has withdrawn from the core consortium and has been replaced by the University of Porto (Portugal) as a full partner. This transition reinforces the programme’s European dimension while maintaining its interdisciplinary focus. The University of Porto contributes: • A proven history of Erasmus+ collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp • Established experience in research exchange and student mobility • Complementary strengths in contemporary artistic practice and critical research • Increased geographic diversity within the European consortium Enhancement of Associated Partnerships The University of the Arts London (UAL) has joined GAP as an Associated Partner, contributing strategic expertise drawn from its leadership of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Global Design Practice (with the Kyoto Institute of Technology). UAL provides: • Guidance on joint degree governance, accreditation, and sustainability • Best practices in curriculum design and transnational programme management • Insights into creative technology and innovation through its Coronation Challenge CreaTech Report Continued Engagement The Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków remains engaged with the GAP initiative as a potential Associated Partner, preserving valuable institutional relationships and enabling future collaboration and mobility opportunities. Strategic Rationale These adjustments strengthen the consortium by: 1. Building on existing partnerships with demonstrated collaborative capacity 2. Integrating expertise from institutions with established joint-degree experience 3. Preserving geographic and pedagogical diversity within Europe 4. Aligning consortium composition with long-term sustainability objectives The revised consortium Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, University of Porto, and University of Kentucky, supported by University of the Arts London constitutes a strong and strategically aligned foundation for the successful launch and continuation of this innovative Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme in Global Artistic Practice.
