Description
BACKGROUND: Availability of inexpensive remote sensing and communications systems
enables bridge owners to remotely monitor real time data transmitted from an in-service bridge.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to demonstrate the capabilities afforded by remote
sensing technology on a bridge in Kentucky. For illustrative purposes one or two bridges will be
instrumented with strain gauges, LVDTs, temperature gauges, etc. to remotely measure strains,
deflections, temperature, etc. The data can be viewed in real time on a web site that, if desired,
will require a password for access.
EXPECTED BENEFITS: This is the ftrst bridge that is instrumented for remote sensing and
monitoring in Kentucky. The lessons learned will be instrumental in monitoring of critical
bridges in the future (e.g. Maysville and Owensboro cable-stay bridges, Brent-Spence Bridge, etc
FY 2006 ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The instrumentation placement on the 1-64 bridge over US
60 was completed and the setup for remote access to the data was initiated.
FY 2007 PROPOSED WORK: Complete the remote access setup and monitor the 1-64 bridge
over US 60.
