Description
Conduct a literature review. Survey selected SHAs and KYTC Districts to obtain
infol1nation/opinions about expansion joint/header installation, perfol1nance and special
maintenance requirements/practices.
2. Obtain cost, perfol1nance data, specifications, installation instmctions and maintenance
requirements on specific joint designs fi'om manufacturers/material suppliers.
3. Develop guidance on joint selection enumerating prefeITedjoints for both new construction
and maintenance. Identify joint perf0ll11anCe tests that may be used to evaluate new joints after
they are placed.
4. Review the best performing deck joints/details (based upon Objective I) and identify potential
areas for joint perfol1nance enhancements. Interface with joint/material manufacturers to
implement enhanced joint materials/designs.
5. Assist in the development ofKYTC experimental projects incorporating bridge expansion
joints that offer improved performance. Monitor the placement of experimental joints during
construction.
