Description

OBJECTIVES • Determine key characteristics of rivers in the study area (an 800 mile stretch of the Ohio River from Cincinnati, OH, to Cairo, IL, where the Ohio River meets the Mississippi River), including frequency and severity of flooding, draft, length, and historical and changing flow conditions • Determine characteristics of locks and dams in the study area, including commodity flow, age of locks, current state of repair, length and width, and current maintenance/upgrade plans • Determine characteristics of port facilities for the inland waterway system, including total tonnage of freight, intermodal connections at each port, what types and volumes of commodities pass through each port, and key port infrastructure • Determine characteristics of existing river operations, including push/tug boats and barges that carry cargo on inland waterways
