KCTRP: Effects of Chloride Contamination/Winter Bridge Painting on Coating's Performance 08-366

OBJECTIVES: 1) Develop a reliable procedure to quantitatively charge anticipated levels of surface chlorides on coatings test panels. 2) Determine the relative effectiveness of common surface chloride ex1:ractiontests. 3) Determine acceptable surface chJoride levels for representative KYTCqualified wating systems using commonly specified surface preparation methods. 4) Conduct sampling of surface chloride concentrations on problem locations (under deck joints) on 30 KYTC bridges in winter months. 5) Provide KYTC with recommendations on surface chloride tests and acceptable concentrations for representative KYTC-qualified coatings systems and recommendations on continuing winter bridge maintenance painting operations.
