Description

Proposed Five-Year Evaluation of Early Care and Education in Kentucky Research Goals: 1) Determine children’s progress toward key indicators of school success across program type • Licensed 3-4 STARS programs – Head Start and privately-owned programs; and • Preschool programs that have been through the Preschool Program Review Process (P2R) 2) Determine quality of classrooms across program types 3) Determine if children’s progress maintains longitudinally and if there are differential effects in progress depending on program type 4) Determine the interaction effects between *developmentally appropriate practices and teacher-child interactions on child outcomes/progress. 5) Year 1: Determine the cost per child of a licensed child care program achieving 3-4 STARS status. The table below describes a five-year proposed research plan that evaluates a) early care and education and primary programs in Kentucky, b) indicators of children’s school success skills (across years) and c) the impact of children’s early care placement on school success outcomes in kindergarten through 3rd grade. 2012-2013 Setting: 3-4 STARS licensed programs and P2 R programs Study: Pre-Post Outcome Data Collected: Child outcome data using curriculum based measures for academic and social- 2013-2014 Setting: Kindergarten Classroom Study: Pre-Post Outcome Data Collected: Child outcome data using curriculum based measures for academic and social- 2014-2015 Setting: First Grade Classroom Study: Pre-Post Outcome Data Collected: Child outcome data using curriculum based measures for academic and social- 2015-2016 Setting: Second Grade Classroom Study Pre-Post Outcome Data Collected: Child outcome data using curriculum based measures for academic and social- 2016-1017 Setting: Third Grade Classroom Study Pre-Post Outcome Data Collected: Child outcome data using curriculum based measures for academic and social- emotional outcomes -Fall/Spring Classroom Quality (CLASS) Teacher Survey Family Demographics Year 1: Survey/Interview of Family Childcare program emotional outcomes -Fall/Spring Classroom Quality (CLASS & APEEC) Teacher Survey Family Demographics emotional outcomes - Fall/Spring Classroom Quality (CLASS & APEEC) Teacher Survey Family Demographics emotional outcomes -Fall/Spring Classroom Quality (CLASS & APEEC) Teacher Survey Family Demographics emotional outcomes -Fall/Spring Classroom Quality (CLASS & APEEC) Teacher Survey Family Demographics Beginning Sample: A power analysis was conducted to determine the appropriate number of sites and children needed in the sample to ensure a robust effect size (.83). This effect size (.83) is needed to increase the likelihood that difference between program types will be found. As well, the child sample includes an over-sample to compensate for expected attrition which occurs in longitudinal studies of this nature. 3-4 STARS Childcare Programs (N=25) 3-4 STARS Head Start Programs (N=25) P2R Programs (N=25) 4 year olds in 3-4 STARS Childcare Programs (N=165*) 4 year olds in 3-4 STARS Head Start Programs (N=165*) 4 year olds in P2R Programs (N=165*) *Developmentally appropriate practices will be evaluated by a classroom environmental measure..
