Description
Linking Kids to Speech-Language Pathologists (LinKS) will prepare 40 (8/year) graduate- level speech-language pathologists in the effective utilization of telepractice, thereby increasing students’ access to speech-language services in rural Kentucky schools. The LinKS curriculum supplements instruction scholars receive through the accredited 2-year Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) program at the University of Kentucky. Graduates are eligible for state licensure and the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. LinKS scholars acquire evidence-based competencies in five domains related to telepractice: 1) CSD Specific Content, 2) Ethical, Legal, and Reimbursement Responsibilities, 3) Technology, 4) Practice, and 5) Sustainability.
The LinKS curriculum is completed during the second year of graduate training and consists of two didactic-courses, two telepractice experiences, and an externship in a rural school. Two-years of mentoring is provided post-graduation. LinKS is implemented in coordination with UK Telehealth. LinKS is evaluated using a mixed-methods approach yielding formative and summative data. Scholars’ acquisition of competencies in the five domains is monitored. Graduates’ effectiveness in the delivery of services is evaluated through employer, parent, and child surveys. Impact of services on child outcomes is captured through a caseload analysis, and the Kentucky Department of Education’s value added assessment protocol.
