Description
This proposal plans to monitor the presence of several known aphid species (i.e.: birch cherry oat aphid, corn leaf aphid, greenbug) and viruses in the 2016 fall and 2017 spring; and survey for the presence a new invasive species, the cereal aphid Sipha maydis. All these species are potential vectors of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV). The latter aphid species was found in South Carolina on April 2016, and it is colonizing wheat fields in the U.S. since its original detection in California. Sipha maydis can reduce yields and affect the wheat industry in Kentucky.
