Description
Abstract:
Reforestation in areas damaged by tornados is vital to ensure the long-term productivity of forest
ecosystems. Without successful reforestation efforts the area may convert to a forest type less valuable for
timber, wildlife habitat, and overall reduced ecosystem function. The Paoli Experimental Forest experienced
a tornado in the summer of 2023. In response to this, the Hoosier National Forest partnered with the
National Deer Association on the “Reforestation in Paoli Experimental Forest” project to plant 62,000
seedlings across the Paoli Experimental Forest. However, planting seedlings is only step in a successful
reforestation action, as the seedlings and forest need monitored over time to ensure the seedlings are
following a trajectory for long-term viability towards a productive forest ecosystem. Thus, Hoosier National
Forest (HNF) is partnering with the University of Kentucky (UK) to evaluate the success of the plantings now
and into the future. This will include developing and implementing a monitoring system to be used within the
Paoli Experimental Forest.
