Description
OBJECTIVES: To date, the road diet option has had limited use and application in Kentucky
mainly due to lack of guidelines. The main obj ective of thi s study is to develop a guidance
document demonstrating the elements to be considered when evaluating sites for road diets and
identify the process required for their evaluation. The research to be completed wi ll provide
guidelines for selecting sites for which four-lane undivided roadways should be converted to a
tlu-ee-Iane with a two-way left-turn lane as well as implementation guidelines. Thi s will provide
a properly justified and documented decision process that could become pali of the design file
for the project and it would be based on sound engineering judgment. The final product of this
study will be a guide that identifies the factors to be considered for determin ing the feasibility of
a road diet along with the process to be undeliaken for such an evaluation. It is anticipated that
the guide developed will become pali of the Cabinet's policy for evaluating potenti al sites and
identi fying their feas ibility for such conversions.
