Description
This is an attempt by a group of senior scientists to help solve a significant soil problem in Kentucky. The
fragipan is a naturally occurring restrictive layer in about 2.7 million acres of Kentucky soils and 50
million in the U.S. The pan virtually stops water movement and root growth and its’ depth averages
about 20 to 24 inches in these soil types in Kentucky. The pan greatly restricts the movement of water
and growth of roots and restricts productivity of all crops grown on these soils.
The objective of this research is to discover a method that would cause remediation of the top of the
fragipan by a cost effective method using cost effective materials that would improve crop production
enough to make it a remediating practice economically attractive.
