The Synanon Game: Preserving the Audio History of Counterculture Movements and Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation in the 1960s-1980s

Abstract: Recordings at Risk is a national regranting program administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources to support the preservation of rare and unique audio and audiovisual content of high scholarly value through digital reformatting. The University of Kentucky Libraries holds a collection that is an excellent candidate for this grant and meets this grant opportunity’s de?nition of at-risk recordings and will be seeking $41,000 to fund this digitization project. The Rod Mullen collection on Synanon at UK Libraries Special Collections Resource Center contains 1,622 reel to reel audiotapes at tremendous risk of loss due to multiple intrinsic and external factors. The value of this collection requires that the Libraries act now to preserve these materials, and this grant will fund their digitization, description, and transfer to a long-term digital preservation repository.
