The Use and Quality of Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

The proposed study will provide new information about the use and quality of medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) among Medicaid beneficiaries in Kentucky. The primary study objectives are to: 1. Describe the use and quality of MAT (i.e., guideline recommended receipt of OUD medication in conjunction with counseling) among patients with a diagnosis of an OUD. This will include: a. Describing the frequency of receiving any OUD medication and specific types of OUD medications (i.e., Vivotrol and buprenorphine) b. Comparing the receipt of counseling among patients receiving Vivotrol and buprenorphine. 2. Examine how patient, prescribing physician, and prescribing clinic characteristics are associated with the receipt of guideline recommended MAT (overall and among patients receiving Vivotrol compared to buprenorphine). a. Patient characteristics will include age, gender, metro/non-metro residence, region of residence in the state, and health status. b. Prescribing physician characteristics will include age, gender, and specialty. c. Prescribing clinic characteristics will include solo, small, or large group practice; single or multispecialty clinic; and metro/non-metro location.
