Description

The Resource Parent Mentoring program seeks to match newly approved Resource Parents with veteran Resource Parents in a one-on-one coaching relationship for their first six months service. Mentors provide information about resources unique to the area; provide assistance in practicing skills learned during the initial training experience; and provide information about how to work within the child welfarc system. Mentors are required to sign a pledge of confidentiality, make weekly contact, and be available by phone for any "as needed" support. Mentees are encouraged to be willing and active learners. The TRC also provides newly approved Resource Parents a wide variety ofparenting strategies unique to meeting the behavioral needs of children in out of home care, Additionally, Mentors assist Resource Parents by attempting to prevent disruptions and transitions due to stress and discouragement; and assists newly approved Resource Parents in applying skills that make their experience both satisfYing and successful. Goal: The goal of the Resource Parent Mentoring program is to provide support and facilitate skill development in new foster parents and relative or kinship care providers so that committed and noncommitted children receive quality care and placements are maintained.
