Resumen

The transformation of high-toxic hexavalent chromium compounds into the less toxic trivalent form, Cr(III) using some species of bacteria in a packed-bed bioreactors is described. A catalytic reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) is believed to be one of the detoxication mechanisms employed by microorganisms living in aquatic environments contaminated by chromate processing industries. The data on Cr(VI) concentrations for each phase of bioreactor operation and the corresponding Cr(VI) removal efficiencies are given and discussed.
