Resumen

A new chip-groove classification system for analysis and assessment of chip breaking performance is proposed in the present work. Using commercially available finish turning grooved tools, the complex tool/chip interaction, influencing chip-curl and breaking, is analyzed from the chip-groove geometric features. First, the most significant geometric parameters are identified from chip-groove profiles. Characterization of the groove and backwall parameters is used for classifying grooved tool inserts. A fuzzy rule-based system is developed based on the composite profile of the insert and its chip-breakability performance; this is subsequently used to develop a methodology fox predictive assessment of chip breakability.
