Conflict of interest in research

Conflict of interest (COI) involves subjecting professional judgment to secondary interests. Influence from industry, external funding sources, sponsored educational opportunities, medical societies, publication/writing assistance, and duty are all potential risks for creating complex COI. Physicians must stay current with new technology, necessitating a close relationship with industry which may extend to the funding of scientific studies that eventually guide best practices. Funding sources can influence income, research, medical education, and patient management. Importantly, management of COI during the research process helps maintain public trust in physician integrity and medical knowledge.
