Distortion, Distraction, and Disservice: A Critical Response to the Backlash Against Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Social Work Education

This critical response addresses the Spring 2025 special issue of The Journal of Teaching in Social Work, which we argue advances a backlash against anti-racist, anti-oppressive (ARAO), and justice-centered pedagogies. We believe that the issue misrepresents ARAO frameworks as ideologically rigid and incompatible with academic freedom. In reality, ARAO pedagogy fosters critical reflection and supports diverse ways of knowing, which equips social workers to confront structural injustice. The special issue constructs false binaries that obscure the ethical mandates of social work. We challenge these distortions and highlight the political motivations beneath calls for neutrality, which often reinforce dominant ideologies under the guise of objectivity. We conclude by offering a forward-looking vision of social work education grounded in critical inquiry, relational pedagogy, and human rights, affirming the necessity of ARAO frameworks to prepare students for ethical and rigorous justice-driven practice.
