Empowering Future Medical Researchers Through a Homegrown Narrative Review Fellowship

Producción científica: Paperrevisión exhaustiva

Resumen

Background
The Narrative Review Fellowship is a transformative program designed to immerse medical students in the methodologies of evidence synthesis, with a focus on narrative reviews. The Narrative Review Fellowship is a carefully structured program to address the growing interest among medical students in research activities while maintaining manageable workloads for librarians. Designed to enhance skills in evidence synthesis, the fellowship provides a methodical yet collaborative approach for medical students to engage in scholarly work.

Objectives
The fellowship addresses the challenge of time-intensive student research projects by offering a structured framework that promotes narrative reviews as an efficient methodology. The objectives are:

- Educate medical students on evidence synthesis principles and methodologies.

- Develop students' expertise in conducting narrative reviews.

- Promote collaboration and teamwork in research activities.

- Produce a high-quality narrative review suitable for presentation or publication.

Program Structure
Starting in Spring 2026, this fellowship will consist of 1-to-1.5-hour interactive sessions led by experienced medical librarians over 5 weeks. These sessions will cover various aspects of evidence synthesis group discussions, case studies, and hands-on activities. Students will also complete a team-based narrative review project under librarian supervision, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Discussion
This presentation will describe how medical librarians partnered with the College of Medicine to create an in-house fellowship program. It will cover the program's development, application process, expected workload, current interest in the program, and an overview of the anticipated program curriculum. It will also cover how similar programs can be a valuable addition to students' CVs and resident applications while also managing the influx of research requests and librarians' workloads.

Conclusion
The fellowship proposal is an innovative solution to the increasing demand for research opportunities among medical students. By setting clear limits on participation and focusing on team-based narrative reviews, it balances student aspirations with faculty and librarian capacity.
