Resumen
This paper outlines methods for estimating electrical energy consumption of underground coal mines and surface facilities of underground mines, and recommends low capital cost measures for reducing energy use. First, procedures are given for estimating electric energy consumption of underground mining equipment based on each section's equipment inventory and production and each conveyor belt's physical dimensions, speed, and haulage profile. Surface facility energy consumption is estimated from equipment inventory and ratings, time of operation, and appropriate load factors. Subsequently, low-cost approaches for reducing energy consumption without impacting production are suggested based on field measurements, qualitative assessments, and simulations. Representative examples are provided to demonstrate the procedures and exemplify energy reduction potential.
