Federal Healthcare Policy and APRN Practice

Advanced practice registered nursing emerged as a result of the collaborative efforts of pioneering nurses and the enactment of federal healthcare legislation and funding. In the United States, various branches of government, along with their respective agencies and congressional committees, play a significant role in shaping APRN practice and ensuring patient safety. Each branch of the federal government possesses distinct powers to influence practice within its purpose and jurisdiction. Knowing how to advocate for federal policies in these distinct areas is essential to ensure nurse practitioners (NPs) are at the table to expand practice autonomy and reimbursement while improving healthcare quality and safety. In addition to state laws, NPs must be aware of federal laws and regulations that impact their practice. This chapter describes the difference between federal and state laws and regulations that apply to APRN practice. It also explores the strategies for APRN advocacy in federal healthcare policy.
