Resumen

In this chapter, the authors explore the significant impact of flagship universities on educational systems change, focusing on the University of Kentucky’s Center for Next Generation Leadership (the Center) and its relationship with the state’s public school system. Over the past three decades, Kentucky has been committed to elevating student achievement beyond conventional academic standards by fostering the development of critical skills essential to democracy, such as collaboration, problem-solving, and citizenship. Through loosely organized, yet compatible partnerships, the Center has facilitated positive, democratic change by leveraging mutually trusting relationships to promote innovative, learner-centered practices and strengthen community ties. The chapter concludes with valuable lessons for system leaders and thinkers, highlighting the potential of such networks to drive collective action that enhances democratic efforts in school, communities, and beyond. While challenges remain, these partnerships represent a promising approach to transforming educational outcomes for the benefit of all learners.
