Forensic archaeology

Forensic archaeology was developed within the discipline of forensic anthropology in response to the need for the use of stringent and proper field methods for the recovery and documentation of human remains and associated evidence from medicolegal contexts. Forensic archaeologists utilize and adapt archaeological methods for searches and recoveries involving human remains from a variety of contexts, including surface scatters and burials, and from much more complex scenes such as mass burials and mass fatalities.
