Resumen
Pore waters are found in the spaces surrounding all marine sediments. The chemistry of pore water is deeply connected to marine sediments through biotic and abiotic processes, responding to changes in redox conditions, salinity, and overlying water chemistry. Pore water responds to changes in solid-phase chemistry while also inducing chemical alteration. Sediment dissolution, reprecipitation, and recrystallization add and remove elements from the surrounding pore waters. As a result, pore water chemistry is crucial to understanding sediment alteration processes. This chapter provides an overview of sampling techniques, controls on pore water geochemistry, and highlights how to interpret pore water profiles.
