Resumen

The role of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process in industrial applications is discussed. GTAW is one of the most used arc welding process because of its high-quality welds and low equipment costs. In GTAW, an electrical arc is established between the nonconsumable electrode and the welded workpiece. The arc is ignited by applying a high voltage between the two terminals so that the applied inert gas is ionized. The inert gas becomes conductive after ionization and carries the current flowing from the workpiece to the electrode. Many improvements have been made in the process that have resulted in the production of high-quality welds free of defects. The process serves as an indespensable tool for many industries.
