Resumen

Flat and elongated (F&E) aggregate specification for Superpave mixes call for no more than 10% of the aggregate particles retained on the 4.75mm sieve to have a maximum-to-minimum dimension ratio greater than 5:1 for high traffic. This has been believed by asphalt technologists to be a very liberal requirement. The data presented herein give a summary of the findings of a research conducted on different levels of 3:1 flat and elongated particles from a Kentucky limestone. The research focused on the performance-related properties of mixtures designed with 0% F&E (Control), 15% F&E and 40% F&E of 3:1 particles. Overall, changes in the mix properties due to changes up to forty percent of 3:1 flat and elongated particles did not seem to adversely affect the performance characteristics of such mixes.
