Improving the performance of computational fluid dynamics codes on Linux cluster architectures

Resumen

Linux PC Clusters are a cost-effective platform for parallel computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications. However, obtaining high performance on these clusters is a non-trivial problem, requiring tuning and design modifications to the code (and, in some cases, the hardware itself). In this paper we present our investigations into optimizing CFD codes for Linux cluster platforms, covering a number of cluster architectures and two different CFD codes. The single-processor and multi-processor performance of these codes on a variety of architectures are compared, and methods that we have implemented for improving the performance of CFD codes on Linux architecture are discussed.
