Resumen

A survey was conducted to examine the confidence of the US consumers in the nation's food safety system. The surveys asked questions about consumers' attitudes towards terrorism in general and about food defense and food safety, after defining the difference to the respondents. Overall, the sample is selected so that it comprises a nationally representative cross-section of consumers by geographic region, income, market size, household size, and age of respondent. The survey design and analysis is patterned after the Consumer Sentiment Index from the University of Michigan. There are two primary components of their index, which tracks how consumers feel about the economy and their position in it. The survey results indicated that consumer confidence in the safety of the food system is significantly and negatively impacted by food safety incidents and media coverage of the survey.
