Resumen

We have conducted experimental and numerical studies on CNT growth using flame synthesis. Here we report the effects of three key parameters, selective catalyst, temperature and available carbon sources on CNT formation and growth. Two different substrates were tested to synthesize MWCNTs: Ni-alloy wire substrates to obtain curved and entangled CNTs, and Si-substrates with porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanotemplate to grow well-aligned, self-assembled, and size-controllable CNTs, each using two different types of laminar flames, co-flow methane-air and counter-flow methane-air diffusion flames. Our results suggest that possible carbon sources for CNT growth are those species existing in the synthesis region (C2H2, C2H4, and C2H6, methyl radical CH3), and major species CO and H2 in the synthesis region help promote catalyst reaction.
