The forth invited tutorial “Plasma arc welding: Process, sensing, control and modeling” is a contribution from the Welding Research Program in the MOE Key Lab for Liquid–Solid Structure Evolution and Materials Processing, Institute of Materials Joining, Shandong University in China directed by Chuan-Song Wu, a leading expert on numerical analysis of welding processes and plasma arc process sensing, modeling and control. Dr. Wu received all his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in welding major from the Harbin Institute of Technology where he was a Full Professor since 1992 until he moved to Shandong University in 1996. As a distinguished scholar, he has been an Alexander von Humboldt scholar, visiting professor in US, Japan and Germany, and the chairman of the Computer-Aided Welding Commission of the Chinese Welding Society. His monograph “Welding Thermal Processes and Weld Pool Behaviors” published by CRC Press/Taylor & Francis Group in 2010 is a recognized work for comprehensive treatment on methods for analysis of welding and thermal processing processes. His invited tutorial in this special issue will introduce the basic principles for plasma arc welding (PAW) and provide a survey for the latest research and applications in PAW on which he has been funded by The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Key Programs which fund at large scales.
