Resumen

Ogilvie's syndrome or pseudo-obstruction of the colon first appeared in the orthopaedic literature in 1981 and again in 1983. It is a rare variant of the common adynamic ileus. In the orthopaedic patient, it is associated with hip, lumbar spine, and pelvic trauma and surgery. Rapid diagnosis, utilizing plain x-ray, is essential to prevent serious morbidity. Treatment includes rapid colonic decompression. Surgical intervention may be necessary.
