Resumen

Pyrolysis retorting of three Kentucky cannel coals resulted in oil yields of about 30% for the two eastern Kentucky high volatile A bituminous cannel coals and 40% for the high volatile C bituminous Breckinridge cannel coal from western Kentucky. Petrographic examination of the residue shows that the amount of anisotropic carbon increases with an increase in rank. Framboidal sulfides, not present in the raw coal, appear as neo-formed minerals in the residues.
