Regenerating hardwoods using group openings

In order to have a successful natural regeneration of quality hardwoods, there are two alternatives for developing harvests, encouraging vigorous hardwood regeneration. First, is the use of two deferment harvest and second is to provide large openings in the canopy to provide and maintain significant amounts of light to the regenerating hardwoods. Harvesting is focused in the removal of groups of trees leaving the stand generally intact between the group. Meanwhile, openings are created by removing all of the overstory and midstory trees. The openings should be developed in areas where regeneration of the appropriate species is possible.
