Resumen
Lowering of filter cake moisture of ultra-fine (d30 ≈ 25 μm) coal to a 20 percent level using the conventional vacuum filtration could be achieved using a combination of metal ions and surfactants. Pretreating coal slurry with about 0.2 Kg/ton of a surfactant and 50 ppm of copper or 10 ppm of aluminum ions provided filter cake containing 22.8 percent moisture. The towering of moisture is explained due to formation of hydrophobic micro-aggregates which facilitates dewatering.
