Resumen

Soluble, oxidized, nanodiamond-derived carbon nano-onions (ON-CNOs) were synthesized by treatment of nanodiamond-derived carbon nano-onions (N-CNOs) with a mixture of fuming sulfuric acid (20 % SO3 in H2SO4, oleum) and conc. nitric acid. ON-CNOs dissolve in polar organic solvents and water due to the presence of acidic functional groups on both the nano-onion surface and adsorbed polycyclic aromatic adsorbents, also called carboxylated carbonaceous fragments (CCFs). The CCFs were removed by either base treatment or thermal desorption and characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). The structure and distribution of functional groups on ON-CNOs before and after CCF removal were studied by thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, pH-titrimetry, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).
