Resumen

Little is formally known about the U.S. equine industry. Little is also known about Kentucky's equine industry, even though state bills itself as the 'Horse Capital of the World,' with the last comprehensive study being conducted in 1977. However, having reliable data is crucial to the success and sustainability of the industry. The 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey was conducted to provide data for decision-making. The objectives of the study were to obtain an inventory of all equine (Phase 1) and estimate the industry's economic impact (Phase 2). Phase 1 of the study was conducted in conjunction with the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Phase 2 of the study utilized data collected by NASS as well as data from a set of supplementary surveys. Results from this study will be used to identify areas for growth within the industry and opportunities for rural development.
