Resumen
The USA and world economies are experiencing an energy transition. The transition is occurring rapidly in eastern USA with consequent effects on Appalachian coal production and markets. Areas of Appalachia where coal mining was most intensive face the future with mining-impaired lands and waters and with economic and human health problems. The region's underutilized mined lands, most of which are not in productive use, present opportunities for productive use that will expand if current energy production and use trends continue as projected. Quality of life enhancements, including environmental restoration of mined areas and improved educational and health-care access, have potential to aid Appalachian coalfield communities' transition to a more prosperous future.
