Resumen

The University of Kentucky Horse Pasture Evaluation Program began in 2005 in response to Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome as part of the University of Kentucky Equine Initiative. This program works closely with equine operations within the state to improve pasture management and forage quality on Kentucky’s renowned horse pastures by conducting detailed pasture sampling and educating horse owners on pasture and grazing management techniques. Improved management results in reduced need for supplemental feeds and reduces the environmental impacts of horse grazing. This program has developed methods for consistent pasture analysis using visual estimation of botanical composition and laboratory analysis of toxic tall fescue. Results are used to generate detailed and individualized recommendations to improve forage quality and quantity. The success of this program has also helped to build strong relationships with the industry and educate numerous undergraduates in plant sciences.
